In 2011 Rønnekleiv/Moe released the album “A summer’s night at the crooked forest” on SOFA. The London based music magazine WIRE wrote that the album is a technical tour de force. And a musical one, too, each track structured with compositional precision.

On this sequel we meet an extraordinary duo with an almost telepathic interplay.

Recorded in the middle of the forest in a cabin with no electricity, the recording equipment was run on solar energy. With titles such as “You are walking on a sleeping summer”, “Peismusikk” (Norwegian for fire place music) and “Blizzard” one can maybe imagine under what circumstances this session took place.

Helt nya musikaliska former skapas sällan idag. Istället pågår ett ständigt sammansmältande av befintliga förhållningssätt och genrer för att hitta delvis nya domäner. I grannlandet Norge har man länge nått framgångar på detta vis, dessutom inom så vitt skilda områden som deathmetal, frijazz och konstmusik. Till det senare får man räkna stråkduon Sheriffs of Nothingness, hammondorganisten Daniel Formo och tubaisten Kristoffer Lo som alla kommit med nya skivor på små men dedikerade skivbolag. Med improvisation, förflyttningar och okonventionella klanger vidgar de perspektiven på ett spännande sätt.

I en strömlös koja i de norska skogarna utför Kari Rønnekleiv och Ole-Henrik Moe i Sheriffs of Nothingness storverk. De enkla förutsättningarna tycks föda en outsinlig kreativitet hos denna mycket skickliga och samspelta duo. Svärmande klangmoln, ansträngande friktion och gnissel samt aningar av folkmusik är inslag i en dragkamp mellan komponerad struktur och improviserad frihet. Något mys framför brasan är det definitivt inte – snarare koncentrerad spänning.

As sure as winter turns to summer, after Sheriffs of Nothingness' first CD «A summer's night at the crooked forest» there had to be a sequel. «A winter's night at the crooked forest» is a little chillier than its predecessor, it's true, but otherwise Kari Rønnekleiv (violin) and Ole-Henrik Moe (viola) remain obsessed with hybrid string textures, the microtonal wobble of one instrument bleeding into the other, bows pushed hard against strings to generate rude, volatile sounds. Sofa is keen to remind us that the disc was recorded in the middle of a forest in a cabin with no electricity. The recording equipment was, apparently, powered by solar panels. All very Norwegian. But that would mean little if these improvisations didn't have an appropriately backswoodman quality - rough cuts, no place for urban civility.
