Twee
TWEE is a solo work for two snare drums, recorded at the Deutschland-funk Kammermusiksaal in Cologne. Using two drums tuned in close relation to another, Etienne Nillesen draws out long tones through sustained contact and circular motion. Overtones surface. Pulsations emerge. Pitch relationships become audible as tones overlap and interfere.
The snare drum is approached not as a rhythmic instrument, but as a resonant body — sensitive, unstable, responsive to the smallest variation in pressure and touch. When tones meet, they reinforce or destabilize one another. Subtle shifts recalibrate the entire resonance of the space.
Rather than moving from one gesture to the next, the music unfolds as a continuous sonic field. Sound lingers. It expands, contracts, and slowly reveals its inner structure. TWEE is music of restraint and presence. It repositions the snare drum as a self-contained harmonic world. Through sustained attention, form emerges gradually, allowing the depth of the material to become audible in the act of listening.
