About 16 Pieces For Organ
«16 pieces for organ» is Nils Henrik Asheim's solo-debut. On this extraordinary cd you will be given the oppertunity to experience both the organ player, the improviser and the composer Nils Henrik Asheim.
Asheims improvisations are played on the fantastic organ of Oslos Cathedral. The CD is beautifully recorded by soundwizard Audun Strype.
Liner notes
The organ is a machine built up of three main elements: air, mechanics, and pipes. All these are present in the sound of the instrument.
The fourth element is: space.
As a classically trained musician/composer entering the field of free improvisation, I wanted to approach the organ with as few pre-conceived decisions as possible - with only a minimum of basic characters in mind. Listening, more than reflecting.
Does this procedure create new attitudes to musical time and form? Is it possible to let go of the control, to periodically switch off one's feeling of responsability and consequence, so that the results of the performer's actions return to him as if it were the opposing player's move, requiring a new response?
The recording aims to render the sound of the organ in a «live» way, a mix between the position of the listener in the hall and the position of the performer on the bench. Mechanical noises (as well as Oslo's traffic) become integrated in the musical flow.
